Born in Monterey, California, Bob Mackie began his career at Paramount and designed costumes for iconic Las Vegas burlesque shows like Jubilee! and Hallelujah Hollywood. Mackie crafted dresses for legendary figures such as Cher, Madonna, Tina Turner, Liza Minnelli, and Sharon Stone, and exclusively designed Whitney Houston's stage wardrobe for several world tours. In 1978, Mackie, along with his partner Ray Aghayan, founded several trademarks and produced jewelry for a decade, from 1978 to 1987. Costume jewelry manufacturing took place in both the USA and China from the 1980s, resulting in markings that included either "Bob Mackie" or "Bob Mackie China". This USA-made Bob Mackie brushed gold elephant bracelet dates back to the 1980s.
