Yves Henri Donat Mathieu-Saint-Laurent was born in Algeria and moved to Paris as a teenager in hopes of becoming a fashion designer. In 1954 after studying for a short time at the École de la Chambre Syndicale, Yves Saint Laurent joined the famous Christian Dior Couture house. In 1957 Mr. Dior suddenly passed away; leaving Saint Laurent as the newly appointed Creative Director and the world's youngest couturier. Only a few years later would he be ousted from Dior, urging Saint Laurent to launch his own brand and begin his journey of building the YSL name. In 1962 Saint Laurent introduced costume jewelry and believed that jewelry was what made the outfit. He enjoyed simple elegant pieces paired with "crazy accessories". This YSL snake necklace is from the early 1990s.
