Yves Henri Donat Mathieu-Saint-Laurent, born in Algeria, moved to Paris as a teenager with aspirations of becoming a fashion designer. In 1954, after a brief stint at the École de la Chambre Syndicale, he joined Christian Dior Couture. When Mr. Dior passed away in 1957, Saint Laurent became the youngest couturier and Creative Director. Later ousted from Dior, he launched his own brand in the early 1960s. In 1962, Saint Laurent ventured into costume jewelry, believing it played a pivotal role in outfit composition. He favored simple elegance combined with "crazy accessories." These oversized YSL gold square heart earrings are from the 1980s.
